Brasserie Nationale

Bascharage

The societal importance of beer

In 1764, the Funck brewery was founded in the Grund district of Luxembourg City, and 80 years later the Bofferding brewery was built in Bascharage. In 1937, the Battin brewery was founded in the station district of Esch-sur-Alzette.

The Brasserie Nationale was created in 1975 by the merger of the Bofferding and Funck-Bricher breweries. 29 years later, in 2004, the acquisition of the Battin brewery created the Brasserie Nationale we know today.

Since the early days of the steel industry, social life in the south of Luxembourg has been shaped by it; beer was and still is an essential part of this social life. On payday for workers in the mines and steelworks, there were probably two common scenarios: Either the worker's wife stood by at the employer's door to receive the wages, or the worker himself collected them and went straight to one of the surrounding pubs. These establishments were and are supplied by the Brasserie Nationale, among others.

Guided tour

During a tour of the production facilities, visitors learn more about the history of the brewery, the ingredients and the production process of various natural beers under the Bofferding, Battin and Funck-Bricher brands. But it is not only beer that is produced here, but also a Luxembourgish mineral water that comes from a spring located below the brewery, finding its way into the bottle: Lodyss.

Beer Tasting

What would a trip into the world of beer be without some refreshment? After passing under the impressive beer tanks, visitors have the opportunity to sample the drink so popular with steel workers.

Tapping course

It is appreciated by a large part of the working population - a good glass of beer after a long day's work. But how do you get the beautiful froth that crowns the miners' favourite drink? The tapping course offered at the Brauatelier will give you an insight into the secrets of the serving process and, of course, the quality of the beers brewed here in Bascharage.

Brauatelier - brewing workshop

Beer connoisseurs probably all dream of this: being able to taste a beer brewed to their own preferences. That's exactly what the Brauatelier offers. Spend a day with the master brewer, who can teach you how to brew your own beer. 150 litres of it will be ready for collection 8 weeks after your visit.
