Rats were the mineworkers' favorite pets - but not because they were particularly cute. Rather, they became good indicators of imminent danger; at the slightest sign of impending doom, the naturally smart and sensitive animals would immediately start running towards the exit, doubtless saving many lives in the process.. This was a sign for the mineshaft workers to save their skin as well.
