The "Fischi" or "Nuesschnappech" was used as a towel to clean up sweat as well as as a mask, covering the mineworkers mouth and nose to protect them from breathing in the dusty air in the mineshaft. However, it also quickly became the miners "tie" of sorts, developing into a sort of fashion statement. Red and white stripes or polka dots became very popular.
